Speech Therapy

As adults, we talk to others quite easily and without thinking much about what is involved in speaking.  However, talking is a complex skill.  It can be difficult to understand words, learn the word to express what you want or to make the sounds for speech.

Unfortunately, some children with learning difficulties will not learn to talk. Others will have difficulty understanding what is said to them.  Some children's speech will not be clear enough to be understood - but they can communicate.

As part of a child's individual assessment, the therapist talks to the child's teacher and provides a written programme of recommendations.  This programme is also sent to parents/carers and an appointment offered so that each parent/carer is given the opportunity to discuss the programme and any other issues with their child's Speech and Language Therapist.

The Speech and Language Therapy Programme may involve the use of objects, pictures, signs or symbols together with speech.  Its aim is to help the child to communicate to the best of their ability, both with us and with their peers in a variety of situations.

Throughout the year, the Speech and Language Therapy team expect and welcome contact from the parents/carers if any concerns or issues arise.
