Our
Speech and Language Therapy Team is made up of two Speech and
Language Therapists - Mrs. Antoinette Forbes and Mrs. Louise Gribbon,
and two Technical Instructors - Mrs. Brenda Stevenson and Ms Maureen
O Halleron. There is a Therapist and Technical Instructor
available daily from 8.30 am until 4.30 pm. If you would like
to speak directly to a Therapist, please contact the school after
3.00 pm, when the pupils have gone home, as we spend the school day
working with the children.
Our
Team aims to maximise existing speech and language skills as well as
develop effective systems of communication. Furthermore, we
ensure that pupils with eating and drinking difficulties are managed
safely and appropriately.
The
Speech and Language Therapist is responsible for the assessment,
diagnosis and treatment of pupils with communication and/or eating
and drinking difficulties. Assessment takes place from a
multi-disciplinary approach in order to provide a joint management
and intervention plan.
-
the
Speech and Language Therapist considers how a child might
communicate best
-
as
communication always involves another person, the Speech and
Language Therapist also considers how we might best
communicate to the child
The
Speech Therapy Team introduces and encourages the use of
augmentative and alternative forms of communication to include:-
Makaton signs, PECS (picture exchange communication system), Symbols
and technology based systems.
Treatment/intervention
can take place in a variety of ways, from individual therapy
sessions to joint multi-disciplinary sessions, group work or a
class-based programme.
To
maximise communication and ensure safe eating and drinking skills,
the Speech and Language Therapy Department offer a wide variety of
training for parents, carers, education and support staff - a list
of this training can be obtained from the Department.
